TINGLEWOOD STUDIO
With ever increasing demands on housing and soaring rent prices there is a greater need for homeowners to maximise the potential on their existing blocks. Whether it be as a secondary source of income or accommodation for family members, the demand for ancillary dwellings is on the rise.As a bonus, even with all the tricks in the book, you cannot build more sustainably than building small.

At only 34m2 Tinglewood Studio is a good example of what can be achieved when space is limited, and budget is tight. Having the benefit of being on a corner block enabled the key design elements of privacy to the main house and independent access that much easier. Facing east and overlooking National Trust land the outlook from the studio feels like you are on a much larger rural property than the 5m setback suggests.

Instead of creating a separate bedroom the decision was taken to keep the layout open plan, so no rooms are compromised in size, with a small kitchenette and bedroom combined in the one room, perfect for couples. Outside there is a large, private deck flooded by morning sun with a separate outside laundry and storeroom.

Custom yellow frames were selected to reference the owner’s interest in native gardens combined with Galv. Cladding and exposed timber framing, beautifully detailed like a small jewellery box. We have had many comments on the new studio referencing how well it blends with the rural landscape and existing house. Pedestrians smile as they walk past, a spontaneous, emotional reaction to what is a wonderful addition to the neighbourhood.
